Custom Document Property Lost From Template
Hi,
Does anyone know how to create a Custom Document Property in Word 2010 within a .dotx template file and have documents created from that template have the same Custom Document Property? Whenever I open a template document with a custom property the custom property is lost?? Thanks in advance |

Are you sure the Custom Document Property was saved in the template? For example, have you opened the template for editing and confirmed that the Custom Document Property is there? Are you sure you're actually using the modified template, and you didn't modify a copy of it?

thanks for the reply. yes it is still saved in the template but if i open the template from windows explorer it opens a new document based on template (rest of features are there) but the custom property no longer exists. does this not happen for you?

Quote:
To edit the template, you need to open it from within Word, using File>Open, choose 'All Word templates' from the Type dropdown, then navigate to the templates folder and choose your template.

Thanks, yes that is what I do to initially edit the template and add the Custom Document Property and that saves to the template. However if I now open the template from explorer (so no longer the original but a copy based off the original) the Custom Document Property is no longer there however the rest of the templates features are there (e.g. formatting etc).
I think I'm using templates correctly, it just seems that the Custom Document Property isn't being passed on to documents based off the template. Thanks again for any assistance. |

That really does suggest you're editing one template and creating a document from another template.
I have just re-confirmed that, in Word 2010, a Custom Document Property added to a template is replicated in a document based on that template. See attached. double-click on the template and Word should create a new document with a Yes/No Custom Document Property named 'Test'.

Ok, so your example worked. And I created another template (macro enabled) and that worked too. However the template I've added it to is the 'normal.dotm' template and that is where I am having problems - I probably should have mentioned this at the start but thought it was the same as other templates.
I've taken a copy of the normal.dotm and renamed it to notnormal.dotm and documents created from that template have the Custom Document Property, if I rename it back to normal.dotm documents created from it no longer have the CDP. Seems to be the case: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...-field-to-Word http://www.vbaexpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5119 |

You can edit the Normal template directly. However, you have to make sure you edit the same copy of it that you're double-clicking - Word stores copies in multiple folders. See the 'Sticky' post at the top of this forum for how to find the 'correct' one for both purposes.
