Default Separate heading numbers

Hello!

So I've been using the guides to create numbered headings, and this has worked out perfectly for all my projects, however now I have another challenge and I cant seem to work it out.

If you look at screenshot 1, you will see that the first few headings are numbered. If you look at the second screenshot you will see that the first few headings are numbered with letters.

How do I keep the headings at the same priority as heading 1 but use letters instead like screenshot 2?

Hope you can help

Thanks

(I am assuming you want this to apply to the whole document...i.e., the TOC and the Body of the document)

By defining the number format/style.
- Right-click on the applicable heading
- Scroll down to Numbering
- Move cursor to "Define New Number Format..." (New menu appears)
- Select the number style needed from the Number style drop-down menu
- Make any font/format adjustments needed

Does this not update the entire project? I only want the lettered headings for the first few, I want introduction to start with number 1.

That is not what I understood from your original entry, so let's clarify...you want a mixture of both Roman Numeral and Numbered headings (as illustrated in your attachments)? At what point do you want switch between the two?

I'm sorry, I thought the screenshots were enough

The first screenshot is my document. I want Roman Numeral headings up until 'Introduction', exactly the same way as the second screenshot. Then Numbered headings after this.

With that in mind, you will only be applying the change to that individual style (Heading 1) and you would get a pop-up window reminding you that all remaining headings of that type will also be modified.

So, the data I provided above should work without modifying the remaining styles (Heading 2,3,4...).

If I am in error, I will gladly stand corrected by our resident experts.

The problem is that I would like to use heading style 1 for the rest of the document. This can be seen in the contents page on the second screenshot as 'Introduction' is in line with the headings above it, but subheadings are indented.

If I used Roman numerals for heading one and changed all my current heading 1 headings to heading 2, they would appear indented on the contents page.

There must be a simple way of doing this, almost all books have a preface in which roman numerals are used for headings!

I read somewhere that I could use a style break and then have difference styles for before and after the introduction heading - but I dont know how to do this.

Not if you change the TOC2 Style to not be indented ...

I can see that this would work, but I would have to redo the entire style to change all the numbered for every sub heading, then go through my document and change every heading down one scale.

There must be a simpler way to do this, every book does it!!

Changing the numbering levels attached to each Style is a fairly simple matter. Changing the Styles for your headings is also quite easy - you can do it using Find/Replace (just be careful to do it from the lowest level upwards).

The only tedious part might be matching the formatting.

Just a thought - is there not some way to do this using section breaks?

I've seen this done in Word before, and I know there is a simpler way of doing it. By posting on the Microsoft forums I was merely hoping to find another audience. You must realise that if individuals have seen that this thread has been answered they might not endeavour to reply. However, I should have included the cross posting link.

Not possible with section breaks.

We have no objection here to cross-posting; only to the failure to provide links. Not providing them deprives others of the benefits of the related discussions and can result in people wasting their time rehashing approaches that have already been covered elsewhere, including having people trying to 'solve' the problem well after it has been solved to the OP's satisfaction in another forum. There have been numerous occasions where I've seen exactly that.
