Default a line I can't get rid of

My boss put footnotes into a document that I saved. I took that document did "save as" to use as a template for the next very similar document. A black line remains that I think is from the original footnotes version. I can't select it to turn it white either. GO AWAY LINE. I don't want to copy paste into a new document due to many many formatted and captioned pictures, tables, & charts... shifting will occur. The line looks like this __________________ I know there is a smart person in this forum who will say oh just do x and it will disappear... I await that relief.

I believe you are describing a footnote separator (or a footnote continuation separator). Switch to Draft view. On the References tab, click Show Notes. In the footnotes pane, select Footnote Separator and delete any line that you find there. Do the same for Footnote Continuation Separator. When you are done, close the footnotes pane and return to Print Layout view.

oddly enough if I copy and paste it into another new document I DO get the footnote continuation separator. If I do that then i have to reformat the whole document..spacing defaults to 10 point anyone know how to get it to default to zero in word 2007

Are you saying that you were unable to display the Footnotes pane? On the View tab, click Draft; Word switches to Draft view. On the References tab, you'll find that the Show Notes button is clickable. Click it, and Word displays the footnotes pane at the bottom of the window. Click the arrow next to the drop down, and you'll find Footnote Separator, Footnote Continuation Separator, Footnote Continuation Notice, and All Footnotes as options.

When it comes to your second question—changing the spacing defaults—you can click the Manage Styles button in the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S). On the Set Defaults tab of the dialog box, make the desired changes. In particular, change Spacing After and Spacing Before to zero. Select "New documents based on this template" in order to save the new settings to the template attached to the current document.

What I am saying is I click Draft, I click references, click show notes and a different window comes upthan the one you describe. If I cut and past my document into a new file then I follow your instructions because the drop window DOES appear as you describe. Given you have shown me how to use manage styles button to get rid of extraepous spaces I will just copy and paste the whole thing elsewhere and start over. <email details removed by moderator>

The footnote separator & footnote continuation separator are generated automatically by Word when you add footnotes to a document. They only appear on pages that have footnote text and are designed to provide a visual break between the body and the footnote.

If you don't want the separators to appear, you need to modify them. You do that by clicking on View>Draft. Make sure the zoom is set to at least 100%, then clcik on References>Show Notes, to display the footnotes panel at the bottom of the screen. There, you can choose the footnote separator & footnote continuation separator from the dropdown. When you do that, you'll see the 'unwanted' line. Simply delete it (you cannot delete the ¶, though you can format it in a smaller point size and/or as hidden text).

Copying & pasting the content to a new document will not resolve the issue, as you'll get its default separators.

1.open document
go to view tab >click
draft > click (then the document changes)
2. click on references tab
Show notes> click
A dialogue box appears
VIEW FOOTNOTES
This document has footnotes and endnotes
Do you want to :
X view footnote area
View endnote area

Ok Cancel

OK, I see your point. When a document contains both footnotes and endnotes, you get a dialog box. If you select the option to view footnotes it may fail. This is obviously a bug. It appears you can work around it by choosing a different zoom before trying to view the notes.
