Default Changing the default template

Hi guys,

I recently created a new template but I want to change my newly created one to the default one, so everytime word opens up it will automatically save in that template.

How can I change the default template?

could you describe step-by-step please. thanks

Hi
You need to name your new Template as Normal.dot and replace all current versions of Normal.dot with the new version.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Note that replacing Normal.dotm is not a good idea. For one thing, you will lose customizations already saved to that file. What you can do is modify the template to suit your needs.

Stefan is absolutely right in what he says and I should have mentioned this in my response.
Another option is to use the Organiser and copy across any changes you have made in your new template to your Normal template. That way you will not lose anything you may have created in your current Normal template.
Thanks Stefan.
Kind regards
Tony

You can also edit the Normal template directly, if you wish, by opening it as a document. However, for really big changes (such as adding header/footer content, design elements such as text boxes, etc.) it's more appropriate to create a custom template. Put the template in the User Templates folder and add a shortcut on the desktop.

Another approach is to add the appropriate command-line switch to the Word shortcut. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210565 With this approach, you could have one shortcut for starting Word normally, and another for starting it with your custom template.
