Word document won't save too large?
I have created a new Word Document using The Master Genealogist program. My file is currently 679MB and 283 pages long. I am creating a genealogy book (I created a larger book 3 years ago using Office2000 and Windows XP). The program creates the document part way and then the pictures that are embedded start to show as just little empty boxes. It will not let me save the document says not enough memory have tried to convert, and have tried to save as a 97-2003 file. It keeps coming up with insufficient memory and/or the path is unavailable. I took this document on a flash drive to a friend that has a Mac and they were able to open the document and see all the pictures, they then converted the file to a PDF file for me and now I can see all the pictures so they were created just will not display because Word has a size limitation of I believe 512MB. Is there any way around this size problem. My last book was a total of 598 pages long 830MB and had more pictures than the current book I am trying to produce. What happened between Word2000 and Word2010?

It's not the number of pages. I'm writing a book that's approaching 1300 pages. I have no problem with Word 2010 except certain simple operations are very slow. But I have no pictures so my file size is only about 3.7 MB. Maybe you could reduce the number of pictures? Good luck-

Word 2007 & later have a maximum file size of 512MB. Do bear in mind that Word 2007 & later do much more content compression for docx files than the older versions could with doc files, so you can't really compare one with the other. All Word versions also have a limit of 32MB on the unformatted text content. The file size limits for previous versions were not published.
Just opening & rendering a 512MB file will take a long time, so ask yourself whether your doing things the right way. Is there a good reason for not working with smaller files?

Hi
You could try putting each Chapter in a Sub Document linked to a Main document. You can then just work on a Chapter at a time. Hope this helps. Good luck. Tony |

If you put each chapter in a sub document will reference footnotes and indexing work?

See Master Documents "Feature". Look at the page linked, not just the feature in Word.
There are other techniques for using smaller files and linking them together that do work and do not destroy the document. |
