Two different TOCs side by side
I am writing a manual in two languages - side by side on each page.
I want a table of content in each language on the front page. For this I have created styles 1H and 1T - for "Header level 1" and "Translation level 1". I have made a TOC showing all 1H, but when I try to make one showing only 1T, I automatically change the first TOC. Like I cant have two TOCs of the same type. How do I create two TOCs - one hor 1H and one for 1T? |

I am not sure how you will get the two TOCs to be side-by-side but, I would create each TOC separately following the normal TOC construction process for each TOC using this link as guidance:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...l#CreateTheTOC. The only difference being that using the styles "Heading 1, 2 and 3" for the Header Level 1 TOC and the using the styles "Heading 5, 6 and 7" for the translation level 1 TOC (or some variation thereof). Of course, you would have to modify the behavior (font, line spacing, et al) of each style so that they match each other. However, if you have other requirements for a TOC in the same document (i.e., a TOC for Appendicies), it may become restricted somewhat. This is my opinion only, others on this board may offer other/better solutions of their own (in which I would be interested in learning as well). Hope this helps. |

For cross-posting etiquette, please read: http://www.excelguru.ca/content.php?184 You have two options, both of which rely on the use of two-cell table layouts. In both cases, the body of the document has one language in the left column and the other language in the right column. The TOC can be in a separate two-cell table: 1. Use only a single table row for each language. Bookmark the content of each column in the body of the document, but don't include the end-of cell marker. This allows you to use the same heading Styles for both languages. Simply add the relevant bookmark switch (eg \b "LanguageA" or \b "LanguageB") to each TOC field. or: 2. Use two independent heading Styles for your languages. With this approach, you can have multiple table rows in the body of the document (to help with content alignment) and you put the TOC based on the Styles used for one language in the left column and the TOC based on the Styles used for the other language in the right column. In each case you may need to experiment with the formatting to get the TOC entries for each language to align vertically.
