Default Figure group and captions

Hi

I'm writing my dissertation and I have a problem.
In my paper I have figures which consist of multiple charts. for example: Figure 1 has four charts 1.A, 1.B, 1.C and 1.D.
All 4 have 1 caption which explains all 4. But when I cross-refer to the figure in the text I can't refer to Figure 1.B for example but only to Figure 1.
And when I add manually the letters they are deleted when I update the manuscript
Is there a way to solve this?

Thanks

I do not understand why you cannot refer to them in the text in any way you want to. What is restricting you from doing so? Text is free-form...i.e., "refer to Figure 1, chart A,B,C, or D".

I cannot understand why anyone preparing a complex document like a dissertation would even consider typing in cross-refs. by hand <rofl>
