Default Link opening problem

Hi,

I keep notes and other info on Word (2000) files. Part of those notes etc are links to websites. Until recently all I had to do was click on a link and Explorer would open to the site/page. Recently all I get for any link is an error message which says;
Unable to open <website>. No program is registered to open this file.
Explorer works OK, and so does Word, other than this and that is has been getting slower. How do I get back to the good ole ways?

Thank you,
L

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Help|Detect & Repair)?

I read the MS support article (the one specific to WORD 2000) and it says, under item #8 “To correct this problem, install the program associated with the document type specified in the hyperlink.”. That doesn’t solve the problem since the program associated with the hyperlink is Explorer, which is installed.

Would reinstalling Office help/correct this?

Thank you,
L

Reinstalling Office is unlikely to help - it does little that repairing doesn't.

In this case, it seems the issue is with Internet Explorer and sometimes occurs after another browser (eg FireFox) has been used. Does Internet Explorer work properly? Is it your default browser?

IE seems to work OK, it is my only, hence default, browser.

Not sure how to access Office to repair the installation (via Help|Detect & Repair). I don't have "Office" open per se, I just open the individual programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) individually.

Thank you,
L

Have you tried Help|Detect & Repair, in any of those applications?

Collectively, those programs (plus some others) constitute Office 2000.

Just ran it on Word and Excel, no change. Since they are trying to connect to Explorer is there a similar tool for IE?

Thank you,
L

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools|Internet Options|Programs and make sure the 'Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser' option is checked. Then click on Set Programs>Set your default programs>Internet Explorer>Set this program as default.
