Default Index: only complete words

When I make a manual index in Word in includes parts of words rather than only complete words. For example, if I highlight "angel" in includes Los Angeles. Is there a way to avoid this? Word 2010; Windows XP

Thanks.

How did you mark the Index entries?

If I create some text with 'Angel', 'angel' and 'Los Angeles' and tell the Indexer to mark all 'Angel' or 'angel' entries, 'Los Angeles' does not get marked. The reverse is also true. Indeed, telling the Indexer to mark all 'Angel' entries doesn't mark any 'angel' entries, or vice-versa.

I indexed manually; maybe that's the problem? I went through the document, highlighted a word I wanted to index and when it showed up in the "Mark Index Entry" I hit "Mark." I did it this way because I wasn't sure of all the words I wanted to index so I didn't think automatically indexing would work well.

Also Cross and cross are different entries, which also include crisscross and across.

Evidently, there's something wrong in your approach - marking 'cross' as an Index entry, via 'Mark All', won't mark 'Cross', 'crisscross' or 'across'.

Ok, sorry, that was my fault: I found one problem with "cross" (I'd mistakenly marked fragments in other words; don't ask me: I don't know why!). But there are still two entries for "cross" and for "book" in the index. I tried copying and pasting and coordinating capitalization but cannot get them to combine. I attached the document thinking it might help to see it.

If you press Ctrl-F and type 'Cross' in Word's Navigator pane, you'll find 52 entries listed. A lot of these are for the index fields themselves (identifiable in the navigator pane as 'CrossCross' and, if you then scroll through the document, you'll find them all highlighted. Amongst the highlighted entries are some anomolies you'll want to fix, such as instances of 'aCross'. You'll also find an index entry for 'Cross' in the middle of an indexed entry for 'Cross keys'.

Do the same the 'Book'.

I'm not sure which indexed entries you don't want, so I can't tell you which ones to delete.

Thanks for your patience! I did find the "aCross" and corrected it. I copied "cross" and pasted it over every occurrence in the document, but there are still two entries. For example, "cross" on page 6 is listed under both index entries but I can't find any differences among the 3 occurrences on the page.

I'm not sure what the cause is, either. However, the fix is quite simple: copy the word 'Cross' and its index entry from page 5, then go to page 6 and replace each of its 'Cross' words and their index entries with the one from page 5. Then press Ctrl-A, F9 to update all references in the document.
