Default Frustrating paragrah spacing problem in Word 10

I am having a frustrating problem in Word 10. I’m typing a manuscript and find that sometimes I cannot get paragraphs close together with standard spacing between them. There are pages where paragraphs might have 10 spaces between them, and I cannot get them closer no matter what I try.
Has anyone had this problem and know how to solve it??

There is no such thing as "spaces" between paragraphs. The thing that displays space between paragraphs is the paragraph attributes "space before" and "space after."

Click in one of your troublesome paragraphs and then click the dialog box launcher in the bottom right of the home tab paragraph group and define the space before and after attibutes to suit your needs.
