Cross Referencing in Word 2010
I have a document with multi-level heading numbering: ARTICLE 1. (heading 1) Section 1.1 (heading 2) (a) (heading 3), etc. In particular, Heading 2 is set up so that the number automatically includes the word "Section". I have a user that wants to refer to multiple Heading 2s, but only wants to include the number itself, not the word "Section". For example, the user wants to refer to "Sections 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3". When we insert the references, they are, of course, inserting as "Section 1.1, Section 1.2 and Section 1.3". This happens in no context and full context. I cannot figure out how to remove the word "Section" as it is, in fact, a part of the heading number itself. I have considered using an AutoNumLgl field for each of the headings and then bookmarking them, making me able to cross refer to the bookmarks but this is not a good enough solution for my user. I have tried the Arabic switch (\* Arabic) among other things to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (The user insists we could do this in a prior version of Word, but I'm not so sure that's actually the case...). Thanks, Barbara |

After you have inserted the cross-reference field, edit the field code so that it includes the \t switch, and then update the field.
To edit the field code: Press Alt+F9. The cross-reference displays similar to { REF _Ref343812987 \n }. Just add \t at the end, update with F9 and then press Alt+F9 again.

Works like a charm. You think I could have found that somewhere. Do you have a link to a 'master list' of Office field switches that you refer to? I couldn't find one no matter who hard I googled.
Thanks so much for your reply. ![]() Barbara |

You are welcome.
There is a field reference at the Office site, or actually there are several, for different versions of Word (I don't know why there are several versions, because fields change very little between versions). The problem is that Microsoft keeps moving them around, so they can be difficult to find. <sigh> Right now, this link should work: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...133.aspx?CTT=1 (Field codes in Word).

Thinking about it, it's actually easier to look at the switches for a field in the Insert Field dialog box (Insert tab | Quick Parts | Field). Click to select the field name you are interested in, click the Field Codes button, and finally click Options.

Good idea. I think I had tripped myself up by focusing on the number field that I needed to refer to (AutoNumLgl or other), rather than the actual cross reference (Ref) field itself, so I never saw the switch options for that field choice. Thanks again - great tip!
