Default Changing style of caption heading

I am trying to change the style for the caption numbering for chapter numbers that I am inserting in a document. I don't want to use the default Heading 1, Heading 2 etc, instead use a customised style. The only work around I could think of was modifying one of the default styles, but I would prefer to use the custom style. Any ideas?

Why don't you want to use the built-in heading styles? That is what they are for. If you don't like the way they look, you can change them.

The problem is the report writing templates that are used at the firm I work at have custom styles for all the headings and sub-headings, not the default ones. The custom headings have been adapted based on the style guide for the organisation, so not really an option to use the default styles.

So again, change the built-in styles to match the style you need.

Create a template that you will use for preparing these documents and "modify" the built-in heading styles to match the style "look" you are after.

That's what I have done for this particular document. I was just hoping there was another way of changing the style.

Thanks for your suggestion Greg.

I don't know what you mean by "for this particular document." If you change the styles in the template that particular document is based on and base or attach that template to the other one or one million documents then what need is there of another way?

The problem is not everyone uses the template like they are supposed to. Instead they copy and paste old reports which will not have the updated styles in them. One of the many processes I'm trying to sort out in the office, trying to get people to use the templates as they should. A work in progress
