Default Footnotes in one column section forcing two column section start from a new page...

I'm trying to write a scientific report with the title, abstract and names in one column format and the rest of the content of the report in 2 column format, something like this: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/53854020...t-for-the-IEEE

The thing is, when I add a footnote in the name or abstract (which I want to be at the bottom of the page) in the one column section, it forces the 2 column section to start from a new page, and I don't want it to do that.

How do I get around this?

I'm using MS Word 2010.

thanks guys.

Word forces a new page so that footnotes from different sections don't appear on the same page. I don't remember a workaround, unfortunately.
