Accidental automatic indent?
Office '07
Win7 64 Okay, I did something to change my default new document and I cannot figure out what that something was. Whenever I open a new document, type a sentence, the second line indents and the following lines follow that indent *until I do a hard return for a new paragraph. Then the first line of the new paragraph returns to the (correct) left margin and (again) subsequent lines indent. How do I get back to all lines returning to the left margin? Thanks, Mark |

In a new, blank document, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to display the Styles pane. Click the Manage Styles button. On the Set Defaults tab, make sure that the "Left" indent is zero and that "Special" is set to "(none)." Select "New documents based on this template" and click OK. If/when you are prompted to save the Normal template, choose to do so.

Hard to believe but I managed to not succeed despite your thorough instructions.
I reset the left margin from .25 to 0. And I thought the 'special' was not an issue since there is just white space to the right of 'special:' and 'by:'. I suspect the problem arose when I exited Word. I was not prompted to save the Normal template but to doc1--which I did. So when I load a new blank page the problem still remains and if I load doc1 I'm fine. So what's the trick to get Word to prompt the Normal template after making the changes or Save As this corrected doc1 as the Normal template? Mark |

By default, if you are not prompted, Word saves changes to the Normal template without asking.
If Word, for some reason which must be troubleshot separately, can't save Normal correctly, the workaround is to open the template as a document and then change the defaults. The easiest way is as follows: From within Word, press Alt+F11 to display the Visual Basic Editor. Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window. Type NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument and press Enter. Normal opens in its own window (and you should now close the Visual Basic Editor). Change the defaults in the Manage Styles dialog (this time, you don't have to select "New documents based on this template"). Save and close the template.

I did as you suggested yet the Normal template still indents. I've attached 2 screen shots--_1 displays the Normal template (you can read the filename at the top bar) with Manage styles alongside showing the correct Left settings and _2 displays the same Normal template after I've typed a line and the line indents?

I do not mean to interrupt but, your screenshots show the problem.
On both screenshots, the line just above the space you enter data (I have no idea what that line is called) show two tabs: The left-hand tab illustrates the first line of the left-hand margin of your document. The right-hand tab shows the second and succeeding lines of your text. Now, the cause of that is the settings within your "Managing Styles" menu. Your menu shows within the "Paragraph Position" portion the 'Special" option is set to "Hanging" and "By" is set to .25. That is why you get the 2nd and succeeding lines indented. If you adjust the "Special" setting to "None" (the "By" portion will revert to nil) the second and succeeding lines will align with the first line (no indentation). Hope I did not interfer or cause further confusion (the experts are far more reliable than I). |

Jim you're a gentleman and a scholar<g>--and you correctly saw the error of my ways.
In my earlier post I had mentioned that there was 'blank space' to the right of 'Special' which was a clue to my dyslexic reading of the dialogue box. All is now right with the world, and in particular, my Word default setting. Mark |

I thought we had discussed that setting already? Anyway, I'm glad you got it sorted.

We did. You gave that as point #2. I responded that there was (paraphrased) white space to the right of 'Special' not realizing that the indicator was below and not directly to the right. Once I posted the screen shot my error was located. Thanks for the assist. Mark |
