Default Picture inserted in cell of table is not visible

I have pasted a JPG image into a table cell but I can't see it. The only thing that shows up is the little sizing window for it, and sometimes a tiny sliver of the actual image itself on the bottom. It also does not show up in Print Preview, although it does show up on paper when it's actually printed.

I have done all the things recommended in the various help docs: Text wrap is set to inline; in Word Options, Show picture placeholders is not checked; Draft quality is not checked; Show drawings and text boxes on screen is checked; I cannot find the Print drawings created in Word option under Display > Print, where your help doc claims it resides.

Thanks for your help,

Peyton Todd

UPDATE: Now, suddenly, it's working. I embedded a JPG into a table in a blank Word doc without a hitch, and successfully cut and pasted that into the doc where the problem was. Subsequently everything worked with new tables in the original document. Could it be that all my settings to solve the problem did not apply retroactively? Not what I expected!

SECOND UPDATE: There was another weird behavior described in my post a while later about footnotes. That one was finally fixed by repairing Microsoft Office (via the option in the Control Panel) and this problem was probably related to that as well.

P.S. I'm open to other general solutions. What I'm aiming for is two drawings side-by-side on the page, labeled a. and b. in their upper left corners, and with a number to identify the overall figure to the far left of both.

There's a macro for inserting multiple images side-by-side in a table that you might like to play with here: http://www.vbaexpress.com/forum/show...57&postcount=3
As coded, it inserts each image's name in a caption in the cell below the image.
