Default sequencial numbering keeps breaking

I am using a simple outline list for a training document. At various times the sequencing starts all over again at 1. It seems that I should be to correct the formatting and all the subsequent numbering would adjust.

For example, using the copy format feature I copy the format of an earlier line at the same level. This changes the line that was 1.1 to 4.1 (for example). Then I try to use continue numbering on the next line but nothing happens. In this example the second line keeps the 1.2 numbering.

Why don't the two sequential lines connect with the same numbering?

I end up having to reformat all the other lines for the rest of the document.

This is very frustrating. I have had to reformat the rest of the document whenever this break occurs. The document is quite large so this becoming a serious issue.

Hi Tom,

Your description suggests you're trying to use multilevel list numbering without associating the levels with different Styles. With a different Style for each level, the numbering can be configured to re-start automatically whenever a paragraph at a preceding level is inserted; otherwise to increment.

Can you explain how to do what you described? Currently I am not using any style other than bolding some text.

See, for example: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...html#post16114
The document attached to that post has multi-level list numbering applied to various heading Styles.

Thank you,
It turns out I only had to apply the style of the first section heading to all the other section headings. Then the continue numbering worked.
