Exclamation Equation/compatibility mode issues

I am running MS office 2007 home/student. When i open a document (97-2003 version) created by someone else, then it defaults to compatibility mode; which i'm guessing is the standard procedure.

However, the insert equation option is grayed out (which i understand is correct for compatibility mode) but the equations do not show up properly. Instead strange symbols are in the place of others. For example, instead of a Sigma (∑) a wine glass shaped icon is there instead. Any help would be much appreciated.
