Default Missing standard and formatting toolbars

Using Word 2008 for Mac with update 12.2.8 on two computers in the house.

With one, any new blank document appears with the standard and formatting tool bars in view.

With the other, they are never in view, even though View > Toolbars shows both are checked. They have to be unchecked and rechecked to get the toolbars to appear.

I suspect it has to be something really simple, but I've searched through preferences unsuccessfully to find something to explain the difference in behavior.

Can anyone point me to the solution?

Thanks,

Tosh
