Default unable to copy citations fully from 1 doc to another

as above.

i simply ctrl+C and ctrl+V to another document and kept source formatting. the citation appears right initially. however, when i updated the bibliography, it does not have that reference inside.

when i went back to the copied citation and hit 'Update citations and bibliography', it changed into "invalid source specified".

what should i do to transfer my citations over? I don't want to retype my source fields all over again.

Thanks!

Hi Dylan,

Any citations you've created should be stored in Word, and you should be able to see them via References|Manage Sources. You can simply copy them from the 'Master List' to the 'Current List'. If they're in a document you've obtained from somewhere else, open that document to copy from the 'Current List' to the 'Master List', after which you can switch to your own document and copy the new entry from the 'Master List' to the 'Current List'.

weird thing is,

in the source document, when clicking manage sources - current list is empty.

in the destination document, both are filled, although the one i pasted in is not found on either master/current list.

In that case, the reference in the source document may have been created using the third-party app EndNote, which doesn't use Word's citation functions. If so, you'll probably need to re-create the citataion from scratch - I don't know of any conversion software/macros for this.

no it isn't - because both documents are mine, created on the same computer, using the built-in citation function.

If there are no entries for the source document in its 'Current List' or the particular entry is missing, that suggests the source doc may be corrupt - you're not supposed to be able to delete an in-use citation. Either that or the citation's source isn't what you think it is. FWIW, all in-use citations in the 'Current List' have tick marks against them.
