Default Inserting one office document into another, reads changes

Hello everybody,

Not sure if this is even possible to do within word. I want to insert a word document (document2) inside another word document (document1), almost as a preview for the inserted document. When changes are made to document2, the changes appear in the inserted area for the document1.

For a bit of a background, we have server build sheets which has build information for individual software installs. If the software is installed on 10 servers, 10 sets of documentation have to be updated. It would be easier to have one core word document on how the software is installed and have it previewed in all other server builds. So when any changes are made to the software install, all 10 server builds can see the updated version.

Have thought of a simple directory link, but it is always good to be able to print out hard copies for new server builds and for dr purposes.

Im currently using office 2003, but dont mind upgradign version if i need to

thanks for any thoughts or ideas!

You could also look into Master documents and Bookmarks!

If you go here and look at Master documents, you could create one Master Document, and add the other documents for the build into it, as sub documents.

If you then look here at Using Bookmars and fields, you could add 1 field to each sub document - then just update the Master document, and then it will update all the subdocuments in one go - while still being able to open the individual documents!

If you were to set the Master document as 'Hidden' then no-one but you knows it exists! (to open it - either put a link somewhere before you make it hidden, or go to the folder in WinExplorer and type the name in the address bar at the end of the path)

Hope that helps.

thanks bird sounds lik a possible idea, had a look at the link.

can you link one subdocumnt to many matser documents or vice versa.

I see how you mention changes should always be made at the matser document so they register, not sure how linking one subdocument to many master documents would work with editing
any thoughts?

You would link the sub documents to the Master document - then you only make changes to the Master document and the sub documents will update from there!

Use the bookmarks in each subdocument.
