In my Word 2010 advanced options I have the program set to save backups of previous versions of documents being saved. However, that does not work on some of my documents. When I look at the advanced options for the specific documents that are not having the saving backups occurring, I nevertheless find that "Always create backup copy" box is checked. I don't discern any differences between the documents that are having such backups saved and those that do not. Can anybody help me find a solution to this?

The "Always save backup copy" option creates backups that represent the content "one save operation ago," meaning that the first backup will be created when you save a document for the second time.
If you want true backup copies, take a look at http://www.gmayor.com/SaveInTwoPlacesAddIn.htm.
