Default Office xp (2002) odd spell check behaviour

Have just re-built a xp pc with Office xp (2002).

In Word, spell check is set to auto, however, nothing in the document is flagged until F7 is pressed. From there on auto function is normal, until the next document where the problem repeats.

Outlook is OK.

Have repaired office and reset to default settings, still NOGO.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Brodie

Have you selected the option to check spelling as you type on the Spelling tab of the Tools | Options dialog box? For more on spellchecking in Word, see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/MasterSpellCheck.htm.

Thanks, Stefan, I should have said "check spelling as you type " rather than "auto" to make it clearer.

Yes, I have.

Well, since manual spellchecking works, I guess it must be a particular issue with the spell check as you go setting...

Have you tried Safe mode, as a troubleshooting step? Does that make a difference?

To start in Safe mode, hold the Ctrl key as you start Word. When asked about Safe mode, click Yes.

Have had to deliver the PC to the customer. No I didn't try safe mode, but I willl try it remotely.

The issue is it works automatically, AFTER F7 is pressed. In other words, It is like the F7 promps the "..as you type.." function to kick in, even though it's already set in >options.

Brodie
