I created multilevel lists to organise my thesis. At the beginning of eachc chapter, i've added the word "Chapter" before "heading 1". When I generate a table of contents, the word chapter also appears in it. Is there a way I can avoid this word in the table? I need only the chapter number to appear there.

Not with your current approach.

If you want the word 'Chapter' to appear with the headings in the body of the document but not in the TOC, you could create a separate paragraph containing only the word 'Chapter' before the actual heading (in a different style but formatted to look the same as the heading), then press Ctrl-Alt-Enter to merge them visually.

Not sure whether I got the idea correctly. In the body of the document, I typed the word Chapter at the beginning (instead of putting a setting for automatically adding "Chapter" before the number). In the next line I typed my chapter name and made it heading 1. So now it appears as

Chapter
1
Introduction

Now, how do I merge the word "Chapter" with "1" visually? I tried pressing "alt+enter", but it does not bring them together.
Could you please clarify this?

See attached. The only real limitation with this approach is that you won't be able to use automatically-generated heading numbers (you'll have to type them manually).
