Default Print spacing in Word document

I have created a A5 document with 6 pages and I need to print pages 6 and 1 on one sheet of A4 as the outside pages of a booklet. When I print, the print sometimes appears with inconsistent spacing - some letters abnormally close to each other and others with an abnormally large space between. I am using Word xp (2002) to create the document and the result has been seen using both an HP Photosmart 2710 and a Canon MP620. Can anyone supply the cause of this and/or tell me how to achieve normally spaced letters. I have a sample which I can scan and supply.

Default 1st try...

You haven't got your text aligned as 'Justified' have you?

Another thought is to try exporting to Publisher - as it's designed for creating and printing brochures, etc!

If neither of these are solutions for you, then please post a copy of our document and we will see what we can do!

It might be a kerning issue!? Try this:

Format > Font > Character Spacing (tab) > turn on 'Kerning for Fonts' and set it to 8

Does that make any difference?

I'm now officially intrigued!

Could you upload one of the actual pages - I think actually playing with the file is going to be the only way to solve this one! So, if it's not private data, could you upload a page or two for us to have a look at.

Document attached. One point of interest is that there is text hidden behind the graphic in the top right hand corner. However, if I delete the graphic, it makes no difference to the print. Good luck.

Insert a Page Break at the end of Page 1 and Page 5 and then format Page 1 and Page 6 as you want separate from the other pages formatting

Red face

Based on 2007

Here is how:

First, when I am experimenting, I like to have a basic test document to learn on, so on a blank page I type the following:

=rand(3,15)
<Enter>

to have text...

And save as "TestEraseMe" so I can easily go back if I screw up

Next, I usually turn on the backward P to see my moves:

Home tab
Paragraph group

Okay, now what I would do:

With my test doc open and saved, I go down to where I want to change my Page Size:

Page Layout tab
Page Setup Group
at Breaks, I click the small downward arrow by it
Select "Section Break"
Section Break, Next Page

(A Next Page section break stops the current page and starts a new page. However, the new page is also a new Section. A Next page break is similar to inserting a new page break, but creates a new section, as well.)

Now, my 2 page test document is in 2 parts, which I can now format differently from each other, e.g., one section Sized A4, and another Sized A5

You can, of course, break up your document into as many sections as you want to change

If you use 2003, do the above moves here to see how:

You have uploaded two attachments in your previous post. Just click 'Manage Attachments' button to open the upload window, do not close the upload window before you submit your reply.

Please note that the Manage Attachmentsbutton is not available in the quick reply mode, click 'Go Advanced' to bring up the full-featured posting interface.

Default Print Sample

See my post 18-4-09. Document Hopefully attached! Due to Word's bloated file size, I have reduced my document to FOUR pages (maybe this is why I failed to attach before) but the print problem is still present when printing 2 pages 4,1.

Just printed this off at work - and also tried it at home last night - no issues for me?! All text is looking good - only issue I noted is that there is some additional numerical data showing to the right of the Droma Valley symbol line 1) 978 4239, line 2) 598 4239 - does that mean anything to you?

Print settings that I have used:
2 pages per sheet
Scale to paper size A4 (UK based, me)

All other options are default!

Tried combinations of all pages - no problems bar the one noted above.

Have you been using scaling?

Just noted something - here at work the font has come up as Arial 10 - at home it was Normal + Arial 10; what have you got it set as?
(Grasping at straws here now!!)

Default Also try

What about your print drivers - have you tried updating them?
(that's a suggestion from SJ here at work! She thinks that maybe the problem could be communication between PC and Printer.)

And can you try going to:
Tools > Options > Compatability (tab) > Font Substitutions
Does it tell you that everything is OK?

On the same tab as above - are any of the options ticked in the Options list?

Let me know the results! I'll keep thinking and asking around!
