Word 2007 TOC Updates to Include Tables and Styles

I don't know what happened but a few weeks ago everytime I pressed F9 to update my TOC it would update and include tables, bulleted lists, and other styles. These styles also started appearing as sections in my Document Map.



I discovered that if I closed the Document Map and then updated the TOC, it would be ok.

But now nothing helps. It's a huge doc, so I can't manually build the TOC every time I make a change.

Today I've noticed that when I put the cursor on the TOC and press F9, the TOC updates immediately. Before today, I used to get a dialog box, which no longer appears. Any suggestions?

The Document Map in some versions of Word has a bad habit of including paragraphs that look like headings. To exclude such paragraphs from the TOC, do the following: Press Alt+F9 to show field codes instead of field results. The TOC looks similar to { TOC \o "1-3" \u \z \h }. Delete the "\u" part, and press F9 to update the TOC. Press Alt+F9 again to show the field result.

The reason you don't always get a dialog box when telling Word to update a TOC is that Word decides that it must update the whole TOC. This happens if headings have been added or removed from the document.

Your fix definitely took care of the TOC but the Document Map still has the bulleted lists and other styles appearing as if they were section headings.

Any other suggestions?

You will have to change the "Outline level" of the paragraphs that appear in the Document Map. Change it to "Body Text" (Paragraph dialog box). See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/DocumentMap.htm.

Thanks for your time, Stefan.

But the Outline level already appears as Body Text.

Funny thing: If I go to one of the bad paragraphs (a List Bullet style for example) and click on the style in the Styles pane, it corrects the problem - that specific bullet disappears from the Doc Map. But all the other problems remain. I have to do each one individually.

But I cannot do this every time I open the doc. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

The Document Map may apply an "Outline level" which is different from the setting in the style definition; that's the problem with the Document Map.

Reapplying the style would clear any direct formatting (= formatting not in style).
