Combining 2 column style with 1 column style

Hello,

i want to write an article. It gets a bit complicated. The text is in 2 column style but i want to insert a table filled with graphics which spans both columns. The table is supposed to sit at the top or bottom of the page.
Can anyone help me out how this is achievable?
