How can I generate a Table of Contents (TOC) without including the text thats included in the Overview paragraph below?
1.0 Title {tag: Header 1} 1.1 Overview. The text located here describes the overview of my subject but I don't want this description in my TOC when the TOC is automatically generated. I want just the word Overview in the TOC and not the description of the Overview. The overview description and the word Overview are in the same paragraph {Header 2} 1.2 Procedures. {Header 2} 1.2.1 Some body text text describing the procedures. 1.2.2 More body text here 1.3 Summary {Header 2} Last edited by sbianco; 09-20-2012 at 01:13 PM. |

You are saying that there is one specific paragraph that you don't want included in the TOC? In that case, apply a different style to that paragraph. You can use one which is based on Heading 2 if you want it to be numbered. Don't forget to set the "Outline level" to "Body Text" for that paragraph style.

No, No - I don't want the text associated with the paragraph in the TOC just the heading/title of the paragraph (i.e. just the word: Overview) placed in the TOC. I rewrote my question a little to help.

OK. Apply a different paragraph style (that is not picked up by the TOC) as suggested in my previous reply. Then add a TC field which sets the text "Overview" to be included in the TOC: Place the insertion point in the Overview paragraph and press Ctrl+F9; within the field delimiters, type TC "Overview" and press F9. Edit the TOC code so that it includes the \f switch, and then update the TOC.
To show/hide field codes, use Alt+F9. To update the selected field(s), press F9.

It's too complicated to assign a different style to that Overview paragraph.
I have the that style (Header2) tied to 3 other Multilevel Lists (Appendices A, B, C). I'll just have to delete the words in the TCO for those paragraphs. |

Note that the best approach to set up appendix numbering is discussed in the article at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ppendixes.html.

Yes Thank you I use Shauna Kelly sites all the time - they're excellent source information. My real problem is the person who sets format for the documents I write doesn't use industry/business standards for format but rather uses their own "personal" standards. If they used business standards this thread word never exist.
Another site is that goes along with the site you recommended is : http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html |

I understand that things will be difficult when different reviewers are involved. But be aware that numbering will be very unpredictable in Word unless it is carefully defined (one paragraph style for each level of a multilevel list).
