Default Problem With Customizing Keyboard, and with Styles

I am using Word 2003, currently under Win 7 (64 bit), previously under XP. I've had this problem under both Win 7 and XP. Recently I completely uninstalled W2003 (using a Microsoft Fixit, which supposedly removed every last shred of W2003), then reinstalled. Still have these problems....

1. Keyboard macros for styles stop working. In particular, pressing Ctrl+Shift+N does not restore a paragraph to normal style.

2. Along with this, customization of the keyboard does not "stick" between Word sessions. I set keys for various functions -- I like to use Ctrl+D for the font dialog box, Ctrl+M for the paragraph format dialog, Ctrl+[ for strikethrough, etc. -- but I exit Word, and go back in, and everything is gone.

I have tried deleting Normal.dot, and letting Word build a new Normal.dot. Doesn't help. Anyone have any clues/suggestions? I can't even determine what triggers the problem to begin with.

When searching for help on this topic, the jargon is "keyboard shortcuts."

The keyboard shortcuts you are referring to are built into Word rather than being something you would have added.

It is likely that some Add-In or something in Windows is causing the problem. Try starting Word in Safe Mode. That will be without Add-Ins and with a fresh normal.dot. If the problem still exists at that time, some other program is cutting off those shortcuts. If the problem does not exist is safe mode, chances are the problem is with an Add-In. There are Add-Ins that block you from saving changes to normal.dot as well.

How to find out whether any Word Add-ins have been installed
Add-ins are often installed, without asking you, when you install other programs. They are intended to make that program work better with Word. You can uninstall them and should if they don't help you.

You are partly mistaken. Some of the shortcuts I refer to, like Ctrl+SHift+N for normal font, are built into Word. The others are ones I tried to enter myself. But none of them are remaining in place. Same thing when I move some buttons to the menu bar, it's gone the next time I restart.

Removing add-ins and running in safe mode did not help.

Any other suggestions?

Can you create a keyboard shortcut for the things you want and have it work for this Word session? Actually, just one or two keyboard shortcuts.
I assume that when you close and reopen Word they are no longer there. Or is it when you restart your computer, they are no longer there?

Are you on a corporate network?

Default Found a Solution

I searched and hunted some more. A thread, somewhere else, suggested uninstalling the keyboard driver (via control panel), and restarting the computer. Windows then automatically reinstalls the keyboard driver. This has worked for me. *Why* is would work, I can't imagine, but it worked.
