Question Add increasing number at document opening

Hi,
I have a need to add an automatically increasing number to a document each time it is opened. The document (a coating inspections record) is accessible by 5 to 6 people from different computers and each person wont know what number the record should be up too.

It is a requirement of this project that i cant individually assign a numbering system to each person, i have to follow a sequence... 1000, 1001, 1002 etc etc.
I've never had restrictions like this placed on me before and frankly have no idea how to make it work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Again,
I have read, and re-read the instructions in the 2 provided links.... as i said earlier, a ton of information. The thing is that these 2 links refer to word 07 and i'm using word 2010. I cant find how to add the document property "InvNum" because File, Properties, Custom does not exist (in that word 10 anyway) I can only get to properties via File, info, properties(in the dropdown box), Advanced properties Once in advanced properties i can click the custom tab but am not able to save anything in that tab.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

The option does exist in Word 2010. To get there press Alt-F,I,Q,S,Tab,Enter, then select 'Custom'.

Hi Paul,
I've given it my best shot, but macros &/or VB code just aren't my strong point. I'll see if i can find someone onsite with more smarts than my good self.

Thanks.

You could, of course, simply make a copy of the document attached to this post, add your own content (relocating the DOCPROERTY field to where you need it) and adjust the page layout. That way, you wouldn't need to involve yourself in macro issues.
