Default Background image printing as a pattern

I'm trying to convert a Word doc that has a custom background graphic into a PDF.

When I do this using either Word's own PDF creation command or by sending it to 'print' as an Adobe PDF, the background image is displayed as a repeating pattern.

Exactly the same thing happens if I try to print it on my Cannon printer. Anyone know why Word would do that? Have I inadvertently made a wrong setting somewhere?

If the background picture is a custom watermark, the default is for it to repeat on all pages, because watermarks are added to the page header. You can activate the header/footer view by double-clicking the header. Then you can select and delete the watermark, or you can cut it out of the header and paste it into the body of the document, in which case it would only appear on that specific page.

Thanks for this info but the graphic wasn't added in the header.

I did this:
page layout>page color>fill effects>picture>select picture

and then loaded a pic I had already created for it.

One thing I noticed which may or may not be related is that the 'Lock picture aspect' box is greyed out - don't know if this is relevant....

I don't think there is anything you can do about that. Pictures added as fill effects are always repeated on the page.
