Elementary question
Hi,
this is such an elementary question, that I am embarassed to ask. But here goes. I need to highlight several words in a Word document that are not adjacent to each other. One word is in one sentence, another might be in another sentence, another word might be in a different paragraph. How do I highlight all of the words at the same time? Thanks, -cinque |

Since you said that it may be a basic question, I am assuming you are not talking of using a macro for highlighting specific words in a document. You just want to know how to highlight different portions of text.
I do not know how the menu is arranged in Office XP, but the instruction should be available in the Online/ Offline Help of Word. Click on the ? symbol on the top left corner of the Word window. In the Window that will open up, in the Search field, type "highlight" and hit Enter. You will see detailed instructions about highlighting text. |

Word 2003 does not have the ? on the top left. It does have Help, though, which can be reached using the F1 key. Highlight, though, in Word jargon means marking particular text with a color overlay.
I think the question here is about selecting text in non-contiguous areas of the document. You do this by first selecting some text, then, holding down the Ctrl key and moving the selection point with the mouse, select additional areas. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275969 |

I guess that is what Cinque wants - selecting non-contiguous text. I was thrown off by his use of the word highlight. And, sorry for the error, the ? button is on the top right corner of the Word window, not the top left. And yes, F1 is easier to access help.

Word 2003's interface is very different from that in Word 2007 and 2010. It does not have a question mark button, it has a Help menu.

I'm sorry, I should have used the word "select" instead of "highlight". I used the help feature to ask how I could select non adjacent text. And I was told to hold down the shift key to select the first text, and then hold down the ctrl and shift key to select any additional text.
Problem solved. Thanks |

I suspect you'll need to use the mouse to move to the non-adjacent text. You can also use it to select that text while holding down the Ctrl key.
