Default Copy and pasting problem Word 2010

Hi,

I'm trying to update documents from an earlier version of Word into 2010. These are legal documents and there are a number of subsections all numbered, for example 1.1.2.4 etc. The receiving document has a style to conform to but is a doc not a template. The problem I am having is that when I copy the content of the old document and paste this to the new one it does not configure to the new style of headings, font, size or bullet point spacing. I understand the different paste options and have used 'used destination theme' but it still defaults back to the formatting of the original (earlier Word version document). Am I having a blond moment, can someone help me.

Many thanks Sarah

Are you using specific paragraph styles for headings, bullets, and other paragraphs?

Hi Stefan
yes the source document has got headings that are in the Styles box. I removed these and selected normal and saved this but it keeps defaulting back to the style each time I go in. The source document has bullets which again are different to the destination file. It seems like there are some hidden commands that I can't seem to remove or over ride when I copy/paste to the new layout. Any ideas, thanks S

When you paste in content, the formatting will adjust to the target document, assuming that both documents have the same style names. You may have to select the text and press Ctrl+SpaceBar (clears character formatting not in style) as well as Ctrl+Q (clears paragraph formatting not in style).

How did you "remove" the styles in the Styles box? I'm assuming that you are referring to the Styles "gallery" on the Home tab? If you want to reformat with a built-in set of styles, try selecting one at Home tab | Change Styles | Style Set.

When experimenting, do so on a copy of the document.
