Default Copy and pasting problem Word 2010

Hi,

I'm trying to update documents from an earlier version of Word into 2010. These are legal documents and there are a number of subsections all numbered, for example 1.1.2.4 etc. The receiving document has a style to conform to but is a doc not a template. The problem I am having is that when I copy the content of the old document and paste this to the new one it does not configure to the new style of headings, font, size or bullet point spacing. I understand the different paste options and have used 'used destination theme' but it still defaults back to the formatting of the original (earlier Word version document). Am I having a blond moment, can someone help me.

Many thanks Sarah
