Display contents of global variable in headers
I have a document (Word 2010) that has about 20 sections and 20 unique headers/footers.
I'd like to change one thing in all the headers from time to time but since they are unique I currently have to edit each one separately. I was wondering if I could assign a value (like 'Revision A1') to a field code or variable of some kind, then reference that field code or variable in each of the headers. If so, I could simply change the value of the field code or variable and all my headers would be updated. Is there a way to do this? |

The simplest way to do this is with a DOCPROPERTY field. You can make a custom document property to hold your information.
Otherwise, look into the STYLEREF field. If you put your information on say your cover page and format it with a unique character style (which may look the same as surrounding text), you can use the STYLEREF field to repeat that information wherever you want. If the only reason for having unique headers/footers is so they can reflect the contents of the section, the STYLEREF field will do that as well in one header/footer continued through all your sections. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...in=HA102110133 |

You can access document properties, document variables, and other repeating data fairly easily.
See Bookmarks, variables, document properties and content controls editor and "Content Control/Variable/Bookmark and Document Property Tools" Add-In (two versions of instructions for the same Add-In. |
