Default Adjusting warped/squashed text in Word 2003

I scanned an old booklet via Adobe ExportPDF into a Word file, and while it's mostly come out looking good, I've come across numerous instances of words being warped and squashed visually. Look at the word "that" as an example in this sentence.

I haven't been able to figure out how to fix this so that it looks the same font-wise as the rest of the contents. Does anyone know what settings to adjust? I'm using Word 2003 v. 11.
