header/footer problems only in certain documents
I am using word 2003, and I wonder if anyone might have an idea as to why "view/header and footer" displays differently on various blank documents. What I am trying to do is paginate using "i" for the first page, "ii" for the second page, and "1" for the 3rd page, "2" for the 4th page, etc. I can do that, but here is the bizzare thing. I can only do it on documents that have the words "header" and "footer" displayed above the boxes when I click on "view/header and footer". Here's a picture of how word should normally display the header and footer box:
But now here is what my display looks like when I am unable to paginate like I want to. Notice the words "header" and "footer" don't appear above the boxes when I click on "view/header and footer". I'm wondering what could be causing this? Is it something in the normal.dot file? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I can't reproduce the unlabelled header/footer boxes. Are these documents based on different templates? Do all documents based on the same template give you the same display?
Unable to paginate? How are you trying to paginate? Try clicking in one of the boxes and inserting a page number. See How to set up a document with front matter numbered separately Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 97-2003 |

Thanks for your assistance. I clicked on the first link and followed the directions exactly, and I am able to paginate certain documents, but I wasn't able to paginate documents that did not display "header" or "footer" above the header/footer boxes.
When I start MS Word 2003, and I click on "file/new", here is what I see. I haved clicked on "file/page setup" and the dialog box is there. Notice the top margin is set for .5", but the display does not reflect that margin setting. I am in "view/print layout" as this is the view I always use. Here is the same screen with the "paper" tab selected: Here is the same screen with the "layout" tab selected: Here is the screen shot of a document template that works just fine. Notice the .5" top margin is shown to be right against the white background. I can do page numbering just fine with this template. Here is a letter template that does NOT work right with pagination. I clicked on "view/headers and footers". The margins appear correctly displayed against the white background though. Thanks, Craig |

Thanks for your assistance. I made another post, but I got the message, "It will not be visable until approved by a moderator"

When I go to the folder Application Data/Microsoft/Templates, and I open "Normal" or "Letter Template 1" or "Letter Template 2", and I click view/headers and footers, I get the headers and footers displayed as the second picture in my previous post which doesn't allow me to do the pagination right. I'm using styles with the recipe template, but I don't use any macros. I'm using styles and macros with the letter templates. Alright, I see that I have a problem with my normal.dot file. It has somehow gotten corrupted when I started using a lot of macros, styles and headers and footers. I renamed it to normal.old, and the new normal.dot file doesn't have any of these problems. I don't know if I will be able to keep my old normal.dot file and just get rid of the offending files. But, thanks for looking at this. I maybe be back. Thanks. For the sake of honesty, I now know why there was the difference in the way the header/footer box appeared in my first picture and the way it appeared in the second picture. In file/page setup/layout/header, I had it set at .1". This is why the change in the appearance of the box. When it is set to the default of .5", the box looks normal.
I thought my problem was in my normal.dot file, but it looks like I was wrong. Sorry for the confusion, but I'll tell you honestly I do think that when I downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro, it did mess with the Word 2003 program. I wasn't able to hyphenate, I wasn't able to properly paginate, and when I deleted the normal.dot file, the new normal.dot file would not save default settings at all. Now that I have uninstaled the Adobe program, everything is working fine. Last edited by Endzone; 08-15-2012 at 02:04 AM. |
