What is showing for page XI or IX?
Did you look at How to set up a document with front matter 2007? |

That's all very well, but what is your page # field format in the page header or footer? If you've formatted the page # field as Roman Numerals, they'll appear that way in the TOC.

In the page header it is XII (Roman Numeral).
TOC & Introduction in the same section. TOC start at I (Roman Numeral). The issue is: in TOC it says 12 instead of XII. |

How did you input the page #?

Insert pagenumber and selected Roman style.

Have you updated the TOC since inserting the page #?

I am unable to reproduce that behaviour. Can you attach a document to a post with the TOC, some representative pages, including headinga (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.

Here's a document that shows this anomaly produced with Word 2010. The table of figures is on page 2 of the section, numbered ii. In the TOC it shows up as "2" rather than "iii." The same is true of other front matter headings.
In the meantime, did you look at How to set up a document with front matter 2007? Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 08-13-2012 at 12:16 PM. Reason: add attachment |

And here's your document back - fixed. Someone had manually formatted the page # with a '\* roman' switch, which Word doesn't do if you use the header's page # format dialogue.

Thank you Paul. Don't know if that is the same problem the OP has. I was the one who did the formatting.

I added Page numbering Roman 1, Roman 2, Roman 3 (Page number menu), same results.
Number displays correctly as XII, in TOC-s (I have 2), it is "12". This is a nagging problem as publishing approaching. Thanks. P.S. The sections are OK. Section 1: Title pages - no numbering Section 2: Chapters TOC (Heading1) - no numbering Section 3: TOC (3-level) - Roman numbering starts INTRODUCTION - Roman number XII Section 4: Book pages - regular numbering start at 1 |
