Images stretching to margins automatically
I'm wondering if there is either an identified bug or a Word option I am missing that is causing an offshore colleague's problem.
He is pulling PNG files created by our graphics team here from SharePoint and either pasting or inserting them into a Word docx. All are stretching to the margins, even when they are less wide at 100%. We tried to duplicate the porcess here, but everything worked fine. I may have to set up a video conference so that I can see what's happening abroad, but thought I'd query this board first. He is working in Office 2007, we in 2010, if that could be the issue, as it has been with certain auto-numbering bugs. Thanks. |

Hi Ulodesk,
It is normal for inserted images to stretch to fit the available width. AFAIK this applies to all Word versions. Note that '100% width' all depends on what dpi figure is stored in the image's metadata. Quite commonly that is 72-120dpi.

Image stretching
Hi, Paul. I'm attaching an example, one of MS's familiar 96ppi sample images, which I have sized to 420x315 pixels. When I paste or insert it, it does not stretch to the margins.
But the plot thickens. Our graphic artist tells me he creates graphics (in Illustrator) at 300 ppi and makes png's of them for our documents, but he sizes them for the margin-to-margin 6.5" or smaller as need be. When he pastes or insterts them, they stay the right size. And, our offshore person replied to me this morning, that he actually is not having the stretching problem either. However, the fact is that he posted a document to SharePoint last week which, when pulled down here, had a number of graphics enlarged to the margins which shouldn't have been. So, I'm still on the detective trail. Cordially, Philip |

Hi Philip,
Actually, your image does resize - to the 4.375in (11.11cm) wide that the 96dpi suggests it should. If you use a graphics program to change the resolution in the metadata to 120dpi, without changing the actual number of pixels, the inserted image will be smaller - 3.5in (8.89cm) wide. The opposite is also true.
