Default Laptop only automatically indents opened documents

Hi All: Have a major problem with MS word 2007 on my work laptop only, all other computers this does not occur. When I open a huge document I am working on (+700 pages) Word on my laptop (the document has transistioned from several versions of Word) it automatically indents all paragraph marks, i.e. cells in tables, captions, table of contents, text, graphs, inserted items, everything. I go through and delete all of these indents manually and save it on my laptop and as soon as I work on it on another computer (which appears fine) and save the document, then go back to my laptop the automatic indenting occurs again. So far nobody on our campus can figure this one out. I am stumped but need to use my laptop in two weeks and would like to find a solution.

Thanks for your time!

Your document probably has the 'automatically update document Styles' attribute switched on (see under Developer|Template) and, on your PC, the relevant Style definitions in the template differ from that on the other PC.

Wow you are correct the document in question had the automatic update on, while my other documents this was off. Now that is off I will test it on my laptop.

By the way any good sites or threads here on templates and how they work?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the links!

After removing the automatic updating in the Devloper - Template and saving (I also tried to save a template of my document), now when I open it up on my laptop all of the formatting and styles I created are gone and it looks like the default fonts and styles. I think we are on the right track just need to understand this template stuff. Now when I open the document on my other computer I have lost formatting (i.e. spacing, indents, etc.) and the fonts appear to be the defaults (on this computer these are similar to the documents). When I go to Developer - Template, automatically update document styles is still checked (that is confusing since I removed it and saved the file)? Must be applying the default template now.

All you should have needed to do was to disable the auto updates. Saving a template was unwise and probably explains why you've lost your other Styles.

Before I made a template (after creating a new file name for the document), I removed automatic updating in the Developers template only and then tried to open on my laptop, but when I opened on my laptop it was the default settings. I am assuming unchecking this automatically update function reverts the document to the default style settings of the computer being used?

No, unchecking the option simply means the document retains whatever Style formattings it has, instead of changing them back to whatever is in the template. Of course, if you made the change to the 'automatically update document Styles' attribute on your PC, the document couldn't do anything but retain your PC's settings as it would already have updated itself to reflect them.

Problem solved but don't understand it very well, I deselected automatically update document styles and then reentered the template I created for this document, then selected automaticslly update document styles and it appears to work on all computers even my laptop.

Once you have the styles the way you want them, turn off the automatic updating! That is a development tool or a tool to repair something. It should not be running all the time or you'll end up with the problems you had at the beginning.
