Default Word 2007 spellcheck changes language

Win 7 Ultimate
Office 2007

The problem I'm having is that sometimes spellchecker will start checking for UK spelling, but in another part of the same document it will show that it's checking for English US spelling e.g.

I recently checked (English UK) a document & added CardioPulmonary to the dictionary. When I now check that document again it’s flagging that word up as an error (in English US). The default dictionary is set to English UK, which it uses for an error earlier in the doc (same session – i.e. document not closed/reopened) & I can’t even add the word to the English US dictionary, as the “Add to Dictionary” button is greyed-out.

Things I've already tried:
  • checked in Start > All programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office > Language Settings & not only is the primary editing language set to English UK, but that's the only enabled editing language.
  • checked the regional & language settings in control panel - all set to English UK.
  • manually added CardioPulmonary to custom.dic
None of them have resolved the problem!

It’s almost as if word is ‘assuming’ that if it’s not recognized as correct US spelling, then it must be wrong! Or is this just another one of those arbitrary MS glitches?

Anyway, has anyone got any idea what's going on here, & how to stop it happening?

TIA

Before going further, spend some time reviewing Mastering the Spelling Checker.

Turn off "automatically detect language." This is a setting that applies to all Word documents. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...010244823.aspx It should not be causing your problem since you only have one language enabled, but It doesn't hurt to turn it off.

Select all the text in your document and make sure it is set to the same proofing language, i.e. English UK. The proofing language setting is something that applies to each character in your document. Pasting something from a different document that has words in a different language setting can "infect" your document with a different proofing language.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your suggestions.

The "automatically detect language" setting was turned off (it was one of the things I’d done, though I forgot to mention it in my initial post).

Unfortunately, I now can’t find where this was, so I can’t try your second suggestions, but I will remember it if this occurs again.

Thanks

I believe that if you paste using text only as a paste option, you don't get this infection.

I assume you mean by using the Paste Options Box that appears after pasting? That’s good to know about – I've often copied & pasted via notepad to strip out previously applied formatting.

I know this is going off topic, but how does the Paste Options Box relate to the options available at office button > word options > advanced > cut, copy, and paste & are they the same as the home tab > paste button > 'paste special' choices?

Thanks for your help

Sorry. I don't know. I have avoided actually using 2007.
Options available in Word options set defaults, I believe.
