Default Anchoring the Page Number to the Right Margin

I have the header defined as:

Heading 2 ###

I noticed that the page ### is floating based on the length of Heading 2.

Thanks.

Without seeing a document and an explanation of what you want to achieve, I doubt you'll get much help.

For starters, I can't see what Word's Heading 2 Style has to do with page numbers. I'm guessing you mean something else, but I don't know what.

Attached is the document.

Heading 2 is used in the page header on the left hand side. Page ### on the right hand side.

You shouldn't use Heading Styles in page headers. Doing so can really make a mess of a Table of Contents.

To control the page # position, insert a right-aligned tab where you want the numbers to align to, then have a single tab between the header text and the page # field.

Following up on what Paul told you...

I agree about using any Heading Style in a header - don't do it. If you need to, you can create a new paragraph style that has the same formatting but without the outline level.

Use a StyleRef field to repeat the text from a heading of a given style in a Header.

The header style, by default, has two tab stops:
A center tab in the center of your page and a right tab stop at the right margin. If you've changed page margins you may need to modify the Header style.

If what you want is the text at the left margin and the page number at the right margin you can delete the center tab stop from the Header style definition and follow your StyleRef field with a tab and then the page number. You can insert a page number field at the cursor location by pressing Alt-Shift-P.

It is StyleRef which uses Heading 2. I just did not remember the terminology.

I think the attached document illustrates the problem.

I want the StyleRefe left justified, the page number right justified.

Can anyone help?

This issue is rather important. I don't understand why on earth the page number walking around?

I just assumed that it stays by the right margin.

Unless you post a document with an actual problem header & page #, it's not easy for anyone to diagnose the issue. Here's a 'fixed' document from your other thread. Note the use of your right-alignment tab and that I've deleted the center tab.

I am attaching a sample.

Page number should be at right margin.

I changed the Header style to move the left margin to match that in the page, removed the center tab setting, and placed the right tab at the right margin.

This took about 2 minutes. It helps if you have rulers displayed and non-printing paragraph marks displayed.

Great!

Can you tell me step-by-step what do I have to do to implement your solution.

The situation is very similar to SQL programming: everything works for an expert, and nothing works for a beginner.

SQLUSA: Did you at least try to replicate what I described with the document I posted? It takes about 5 seconds ...

Thanks Paul.

I moved the Heading Indent to the left margin.

I moved the L shape something to the right margin.

That solved the issue.

I appreciate your assistance.

You should also delete the center tab stop and have only one tab after the heading text.

If I delete the center tab stop, the page number departs from the right margin and moves into the middle.
