Thumbs down Loss of headers, footers, page numbers

Word 2010 32bit running under Win7 64bit.

Word no longer seems to utilize the building blocks template galleries for eg, page numbers. All the usual remedies have been tried and none work. Opening the built-in building blocks template directly shows that the galleries are there but do not seem to be accessed by the normal template when a new document is opened. Building blocks organizer, under Quick Parts, is empty. None of the requisite files are hidden.

What 'usual remedies' have you tried?

deleting built-inbb and bb; deleting normal.dot; the usual stuff; what are you thinking of?

It's not a question of what I was thinking of, it's just that I'm not terribly good at reading minds. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925175

I am able to open the template and it shows that all is there. But a new document shows headers, footers, and page numbers to be empty.

"the template" means normal.dotm?
How are you opening it? Are you using this method: Normal Template in Microsoft Word - How to Open
The reason I'm asking is that you may have multiple copies.

I'm sorry. I was referring to the building block templates, one of which is empty, building blocks.dotx. The other, built-in building blocks.dotx, is non-empty and this is the one that contains the gallery content, all the headers, footers, and page number formats.

However, after closing Word and then opening a new blank document, what was displayed in Word after opening built-in bb.dotx is no longer available.

I have also deleted the normal.dotm template with no results other than its regeneration upon opening Word again. And I have opened normal.dotm as you suggest but didn't find anything.

When you opened normal.dotx using the vba editor and didn't find anything, that tells me that the other file you looked at is not the normal.dotm file being used by Word as its base template.

In Word 2010 the file that holds these items is Built-In Building Blocks.dotx. You need to rename the one in your roaming profile, not the one in the Programs folder. This has to be done when Word is closed.

I have renamed built-in building blocks in my roaming profile and it had no effect. It was of course recreated when Word opened.

I did the same with the normal.dotm template in the roaming profile and this had no effect. Page numbers still unavailable.

You have reached the extent of my experience. Again, the items you are talking about are not in normal.dotm. In general, deleting normal.dotm is not a good idea as a first choice for solutions.

Check Building Blocks & AutoText which gives some stronger tools for working with the various building block galleries.

That is a shame. No one seems to know what to do when this happens, and as usually happens with MS, they don't tell you what to do if something like this goes wrong, at least not in sufficient detail.
