Default Show Styles in Use stopped working

Can anybody shed any light on this "Styles in use" used to be automatic and reflecting those "in use" (as you would expect) in the document. Suddenly it miirrors "available styles" unless I choose custom and physically add in styles that I am using to the document.

Additionally on the toolbar at the top the formatting component shows that the current insertion point has Body Text for example but the Styles and Formatting panel at right shows Body Text "Not Currently Used"

"In use" actually includes any styles that have once been applied to text in the document, even if they aren't applied right now, so it's a bit of a confusing category. :-(

"Custom" is the only option that lets you control exactly which styles to display, I'm afraid.

This doesnt seem correct and if it is, then my current install of Word has not been working correctly for years and suddenly it has started working correctly, and in a fashion that would be totally counter intuitive. No!

Prior to this recent change in functionality, if for instance I selected All items of Body Text and then clicked to change them to Normal - Body Text would dissapear from Styles In use (not retained because it had once been applied), and which it has stopped doing recently. Believe me I am not new to word.

Any style that is now "in reality in use" in the document shows in the formatting panel as "not currently used". And this doesnt matter which filter is selected i.e Styles in Use, Available Styles or All Styles.

So word is not playing the game at the moment.

Hmm, what you said about "not currently used" gave me an idea. In Tools | Options | Edit, make sure that "Keep track of formatting" is selected. Then see if you get the behavior that you want.
