Default Cannot insert .avi file

Good afternoon all -

Using Word 2003 in Win XP

I am writing a user guide for an application I put together, and I want to include video clips of the procedures. The clips are .avi captures of screen activity.

I am trying to use Insert - Object - Create from File to do this, but whenever I do this I get the error as attached (I hope!)

It does not matter I show as icon, link to file, or neither - I still get the same error.

What do I need to do to insert video clips?

Thanks

John

Do you have an application that creates/plays AVI files installed on your computer? The error message suggests not - or that there's a problem with its installation.

That's what I thought too. It seems that Word is looking for something called AVIFile, which we don't have, but we do have Windows Media Player which runs the .avi file fine, outside of Word. It appears that I need to tell Word to use Media player instead of AVIFile - but how do I do that?

hi John,

I went and found an old AVI file and inserted it into Word - both via drag & drop and Insert|Object. In both cases it plays fine. AFAIK I don't have any special software installed - the AVI file opens with Windows Media Player. That suggests some other issue with your PC. Perhaps uninstalling/reinstalling Windows Media Player will resolve the issue.
