Default 'Auto' fields, I want to create a unique ID...

Hi All.

At work, I regularly use a document full of tables.
Each table is labelled "table 1, table 2, table 3" etc. Using the AutoNum function.

I now have a need to group these tables into sections and assign them a unique ID in the following format:

s1_t010
(section 1, table 1)

Ideally the section number will be pulled from the Heading number in that section and the table number will increase in 10s.

Is this possible? if so, how?

Many thanks in advance.

I would use Insert Field > StyleRef to insert the heading number and Insert Field > Seq to insert table number. You can format your sequence to be in increments of 10.

It does have the advantage that once you write the field you can copy and paste it elsewhere and have it update. You'll have to restart your sequence with each heading.

This is far from perfect and someone else may have a better method. It is close to perfect if you don't want the table numbers to restart.

I have had a go at following your advice, thanks for the response I still have a few queries..

1) I cant seem to get the heading number up using styleref, It just displays the title
2) I don't know how to get the Seq field to increment by 10? I am having trouble with the format of this in general (it displays 1, instead of the defined 010, or even just 10)
3) I do want the table number to reset every time a new section is started, but I think I have found a way of doing that, will update you when my mission is complete

1) Use Insert > Field to set parameters or look at the field reference.
StyleRef field

2) See Seq (Sequence) field See also http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...A102110133#BM8

3) Yes, there is a switch in the SEQ field that lets you restart at the next heading of a certain style.

Add a "0" after your SEQ field? The field will report 1, 2, 3, ... and what will be seen is 10, 20, 30, ...

{StyleRef "Heading2" \N \# 00}_t{SEQ mysequence \s 2}0
should result in:

01_t10
01_t20
01_t30

Heading 2

02_t10
02_t20
etc.
