Default smart images: remote and local

I am writing a large word doc with100s of big images ( my PhD thesis in computer rendering ) and the file would be massive if I put the real large images into the draft doc to constantly pass around for editing among my committee ( many editors - back and forth for 2 months). So I need a way to keep the document small and email or downloadable. I was wondering if I could make a website of my large images and just hyperlink to them. Obviously I could put a hyperlink for every image over the figure number and when done replace them all with the full images but I was looking for a method that makes this easier for viewers to see the images in the doc rather than constantly clicking on the links to view. Also for printing it would be nice for the images to be there. And of course, when final something where I would not have to go and move 100 or so images and put them in by hand.

Any thoughts on some kind of smart image system in word that both can show the images but keep the file size low. Right now my only plan is to have a low res image in the doc with the link to the high res image.

thanks, steveblue (dipaola.org)

Hi Steve,

About the best you're going to get in this scenario is a document with hyperlinks to the images on a website. Although word has an INCLUDEPICTURE field that you can use to link to picture files, this only works with files on a drive, not on a website. Other than that, perhaps you should consider making the whole file downloadable from a website (a bit friendlier than choking recipients' email accounts (which often have file size limits anyway).
