Assuming Word 2007 and not 2008...
Office Button > Word Options > Advanced > [x] Show field codes instead of their values I suspect you hit the key combination by mistake. It is a toggle. The other F9 keys are: F9 - update selected field(s) Shift-F9 - toggle display of selected field - code/result Alt-F9 - toggle display of all field codes in document - code/result Ctrl-F9 - Insert field code pair (and if text is selected put it inside the pair) Ctrl-Shift-F9 - Unlink selected field The F11 key also deals with fields
