word 2007 can't insert index after bibliography
I've got another problem with a manuscript. Word won't let me insert the index after the bibliography where it is supposed to go. The command for insert index is greyed out. Any help for this? I include some screen shots to show what's going on. I could only insert the index at the end of the document, so that's where it is now. Thanks, BTD |

It would be more helpful if you put the documents in a zip file and attached them.

It's very difficult to learn anything of your documents by looking at screenshots only. However, if the problem is with adding content after the endnotes, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting...TextAfterNotes.
Note that the article hasn't been updated for recent versions of Word. In Word 2007/2010, do the following to display the Page Setup dialog box: Click the dialog launcher button (the little arrow on the bottom right) of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab.

Thank you very much for your help on this. I want the order to be document (last chapter is 10), bibliography, and then index but I am having trouble. I attach the troubled area here.

The document you provided has no fields.
An Index is a field. Is your bibliography in the form of End Notes or generated by a Table of Authorities, or typed in manually? Did you read the article Stefan gave you? |

I have read the article several times but it doesn't help me. The bibliography is end notes generated by references>insert endnote. When I try the technique in the Word reference article I can't insert the index because the the command is greyed out. My zip document at 46,000kb is too large for your system so I can't send it to you, unless there is a way around this.
Thanks for your comments. BTD |

Did you insert a section break?
Did you change the endnote setting from end-of-document to end-of-section? Did you suppress endnotes for the entire document and then activate them for the section before the last section? Did you try to insert your index in that last section? |

setting end of section
I'm using microsoft office word 2007. I'm not certain where I should be in the document to set "end of section." At the end of the document with the section break? Also there is no reference in my version after selecting insert>reference> footnote so I am lost right there. There's an option for reference>insert footnote.
Also for the suggestion: " suppress endnotes: First: WinWord: File>Page Setup," There is no File option to do this. And so i am lost here also. Thanks for any help. BTD |

In my previous message I described how to access the Page Setup dialog box in Word 2007 and 2010.

? regarding how to send zip file
1.I am reconsidering how to send my bookk to you guys to look at and help me. My total document as a zip file is 46,000 mb which is beyond the limits of your upload capability. Is there any other way to send this file to you? Cloud, email?
I upload the file to Create Space's server all the time no problem? Any other way to send the file to you? 2.Sorry, but I completely fail to understand how opening the page setup dialogue box helps me at all. Can you respond to this? 3.Where in my document am I supposed to change the endnote setting from end of-of-document to end-of-section? 4.I just don't get the advice you have given regarding how to change the endnote setting and don't get how it connects with the page setup dialogue box. Can you give more specific advice on this? Thank you very much for any help here. Sincerely, Britt Daniel |

2. The "Suppress endnotes" option is in the Page Setup dialog box, which is why you need it.
3. This is in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. Right-click an endnote and choose Note Options from the context menu. At "Location," choose "End of section" (for "Endnotes"). Choosing "Whole document" for "Apply changes to" should work (but you should verify that it actually does). The general idea behind this is discussed in the article I linked to.

Look on the Layout tab of the dialog box, and you'll see the option. It will be greyed out until you place endnotes at "End of section."
