Default embed pdf to doc

hello!

in a doc file, I want to insert a pdf file, that will appear as a filename.pdf inside the doc file, and when I click on it, to display the pdf in a pane inside MS Word

I also want to be able to fully view all the pages of the pdf, navigate through it, copy its text, etc, all inside the pane inside MS Word

last, I want to save all such pdf files I insert to the doc file, as original files in a folder same as the filename.doc (just like when you save webpages in .html and a folder with their files)

thanks

You have quite a list of things you want. I'm sorry to disappoint you. Can't be done.

You can insert a link in a Word document to a pdf file that opens the file in a pdf reader, a separate program.

You can convert your pdf to a series of images (jpg) that can be inserted in a Word file. There may be ways to make those images collapse or show. If this is something you want to explore I believe Greg Maxey's site may have some code that would help.

thanks for your reply

however, there are various software with ability to view pdf etc files in a pane inside them

maybe EXCEL can do this? or any VBA code or something?

I basically need an outliner with ability to store files in each of the treeview items and quickly view them (it's ok if editing them is not possible)

and the universality of MS Office products makes me want to implement this outliner inside these Word, Excel etc, because all PCs can read them, without any additional software

Hi userman,

You can embed PDFs as icons in Word documents. Their names will display and, when double-clicked on, they'll open in a new window, using an application like Adobe Reader. PDFs cannot open directly in any Office application. When you have the PDF open, you can scroll around it, copy etc (if the PDF security allows it).

As for "I want to save all such pdf files I insert to the doc file, as original files in a folder same as the filename.doc", these two things are mutually exclusive; either you have the PDFs stored in the same folder, with links from the Word document, or you save them in the Word document.

isnt really a plugin or something, or even another program (text, word processor, etc) that will let me open pdf files inside it?

thanks

No. Unless the end user has Adobe Reader or an equivalent program installed, they will not be able to access the embedded object. The same consideration applies to any other kind of embedded object.

ofcourse it is no problem that the end user must have some kind of pdf reader/editor!!!

MS Word (or another text editor, word processor, etc) will use the default pdf viewer to display the pdf, but the pdf must be displayed inside MS Word (or that word processor) in a view pane!

is that possible?

can we utilize either macros assigned to inserted pdfs inside a doc file, or utilize this:

I dont know how, but maybe it could run a cmd to display the pdf? in a tooltip or a pane or if not possible, in a window at the right, tiled vertically with the MS Word window

Why not try embedding a PDF object for yourself, then double-clicking on it. What you see is what you get.

it opens in a new window, which is not what I want (it is not convenient when having to view multiple pdf documents, which have been inserted into the doc)

As I said: "What you see is what you get". That is how embedded PDF objects behave.
