Default Word won't open except safe mode

Word just broke - I've had it a couple of years. It is part MS Office Standard 2003 on Windows XP Any document when opened causes an error message "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It asks to send a report (I clicked to send), then it displays a message saying it failed to start correctly last time and asks if I want to open it in Safe Mode - if I click ok it will open is Safe Mode.

I ran repair from Control Panel, that did not help. I uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled MS Office Standard 2003 from my company website. That did not help - oddly Word did not get highlighted in Start / All Programs saying it was a new program while so others from Office did.

What else can I do to get Word to work?

I should add that I checked Help, About and the disabled items tab. A Snagit dot file was listed twice. I clicked to enable them and uninstalled Snagit and rebooted. I still have the problem. Nothing now shows in the disabled tab.

Well, I solved my own problem. This is just too weird. I looked at the template folder, considering that I had the "hint" in the disabled items tab that there was a problem with the Snag It dot file. I saw no normal dot file. I click the folder to show hidden files and saw the normal dot file. Then when I opened Word it opened normally. When I closed it, it gave me a message that the normal dot file existed, and asked if I wanted to save the changes. I clicked Yes. Now Word opens normally.

Whew.
